Statement Lips: Red

Red should be a staple lip color in every girl’s makeup collection. It’s the perfect power color to boost your confidence in any situation. Red is always in style or in season, so finding your perfect shade is worth the effort. Beauty Forum addressed that here. Red is also going to be a big deal for Spring, so you’ll definitely want to grab that shade for your statement lip to go with a great thick black liner. Here’s some great choices:

Statement Lips: Orange/Coral

 (Source)

I love the way that orange/coral lips look for the spring and summer! They make a fabulous addition to a glowy sunkissed face. It’s also a very unexpected pop of color that makes any look. Orange and Coral shades can be great for everyday without being too over powering. It’s also a great way to incorporate Pantone’s Color of the Year: Tangerine Tango. Try any of these options below for a great lip.

Beauty Must-Have Saturdays: Lipstick Love!

This won’t be a weekly feature, it’s just gonna be whenever we have anything we love enough to share. These are two items I (Danielle) picked up this week that actually tie together in a way haha.

It’s no secret that my favorite drug store lipsticks are the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipcolors. They’re really creamy, smooth, and moisturizing. I have way too many of these, but found it hard to pass up a Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale at Ulta this week! (Especially combined with my $5 off coupon.) My absolute favorite of the three I picked up is #643 Satin Plum. It’s a light and slighty frosty pinky plum. It’s buildable and great for so many looks because it’s really flattering and not overpowering. It also has enough shimmer and moisture to not necessarily need a gloss. This is a definite collection must have for all seasons!

Speaking of lipstick collections…my other must have for this week is the coolest way I’ve found to store lipsticks because I absolutely hate laying them down in my drawers. I find it hard to take advantage of the variety of lip colors I have because I forget which ones I own. (#makeupaddictproblems?) This nifty organizer is delightful and the perfect way to see all the colors you have to choose from. It’s the super inexpensive 24 Lipstick Acrylic Organizer ($6.99) from the Container Store. Each one has it’s own compartment where it can freely stand up and you can read the colors on the bottom (except the ones with the rounded tops such as MAC). They also have it in the 12 Lipstick Organizer. ($3.99) I’m seriously obsessed!!

I hope you guys enjoyed this new fun feature and let me know if you try either of these!!

Red Lips for Fair Skin (or Any Skin Tone!)

Hey girls! (: So I really love red lipstick but I feel like it will contrast too much with my light complexion, how can I ease into this look without looking washed out?

First of all, I think it’s more about finding the right shade of red lipstick for your complexion. I have very fair skin (lightest bottle of foundation fair skin!) and I wear red lipstick without concern.

We did a post previously about finding a perfect red lipstick, and I stand by those steps. It really is about trial and error and making sure you test out a lot of shades and find the right undertones. I think a lot of drugstore companies will try and just put out cherry reds, which are pretty true reds and those are not necessarily flattering on everyone. I know I certainly can’t wear cherry red without looking like a crazy person.

Also, I’d recommend checking out our Ease into Reds post.

Beyond that, I’d recommend trying out reds in these steps:

  1. Buy a red tinted balm or a red gloss with high shine and low pigment. This is the best way to test the waters with reds, and see whether or not you like the shade on your lips.
Two products I recommend: Burt’s Bees Tinted Balm in Red Dahlia or Rose and ELF Hypershine Gloss in Vixen

  2. Buy a highly pigmented gloss, looking for the right undertones. This is where you can start to see if you like cherry reds, cranberry reds, brown reds or blue reds. Experiment and wear it around the house before you wear it out so you’re not uncomfortable.
I really love the Maybelline Color Sensational Glosses. I use Cranberry Cocktail, but they have a good selection. Any pigmented gloss works.
  3. Try a lipstick. Again, wear it at home first, and don’t try to debut it at a huge event. You don’t want to spend an evening covering your mouth in discomfort wondering if your lips are ok.

I know it seems like a lot, but you can get a lot of these products for less than $7 and it will help you ease into the world of reds. I showed a range of undertones in those products, so you can see how easy it is to find things that work for a range of undertones.

I really think that fair skin shouldn’t stop you from wearing reds. I think if anything, fair skinned girls can pull off reds better than most women because it’s more dramatic. Finding the right red is just about seeing what works with your exact skintone!

Stay Beautiful,
Hannah

Nude Soft Matte Lip Cremes

thewaspsnest asked: Y’all have me completely addicted to me to the Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream in San Paulo, so now I want another.

Hannah, you and I are pretty similar with skin color and undertones, I’m fair with a good mix up of both cool and neutral undertones. What would you suggest as a good nude from the lip creams? I always fear I’ll end up looking like I have concealer on my lips when picking a nude.
I love the Soft Matte Lip Cremes!
I have Antwerp, which we featured in last week’s Prep Talk, and while it’s not a traditional nude, I wear it as a nude pretty often. My lips are REALLY dark for my skin (which is very fair) so nude for me is not too far from pink. This has a little coral to it too. I like that it doesn’t look so skin-toney. With fair skin, that can totally wash you out.
If not that, I’d try Istanbul. It’s a little more nude. Test both on your skin and see which you prefer!

Everyday Lipsticks

Anonymous asked: You may have already covered this in some post, but what’s a good everyday lipstick that you use?

I’m going to go ahead and do a department store and drugstore version for this. Either way you’re going to want to stick to nudes, corals and pinks. If you’re a little more daring you can try and pull of a berry or light red stain, but let’s just stick to the basics for this post.

I love MAC lipsticks. MAC has a great range of colors and finishes and their lipsticks are not ridiculously priced. I’m going to use a different finish for each shade and give you a nude, pink and coral option. Each would be appropriate for daytime, and I promise you could find every color in each finish! I chose not to do a matte because the matte colors tend to be darker and more nighttime appropriate.

Nude- Creme d’Nude (MAC Lipstick Cremesheen)

Pink- Behave Yourself (MAC Sheen Supreme)

Coral- Vegas Volt (MAC Lipstick Amplified Creme)

My favorite drugstore lipstick is Covergirl Lip Perfection. While you won’t have as many options, the shades are still pretty and the lipstick wears really well! Plus, it doesn’t break the bank.

Nude- Covergirl Lip Perfection in Captivate

Pink- Covergirl Lip Perfection in Enchantress

Coral- Covergirl Lip Perfection in Delight (I have and LOVE this shade!)

Danielle sent me this lipstick, too. It’s a Revlon lipstick. I’ve bought a few Revlon lipsticks in the past and been really happy with them and this one is really pretty!

Revlon Lustrous Lipstick in Just Enough Buff

Make sure to try a few colors and don’t be afraid to experiment. Have fun with lipcolor!

Stay beautiful,
Hannah
